Minutes of the June 11, 2025 Yorktown Civic Association General Membership Meeting
On June 11 2025, the Yorktown Civic Association held a general meeting at Yorktown Highschool. The following individuals were in attendance, with Brian Young reporting the minutes: Katie Couric, Jean Henceroth, Scott Fisher, David Coiz, Carol Herbert, Rachel Meighan, Mike Cantwell, Debi Cain, Courtnery Weber, David Friedman, David Haring, Ryan Spraker, Zach Newkirk, and Frank White.
County Comprehensive Plan
Mr. Newkirk described the County Comprehensive Plan and alerted members that they could provide feedback through June 30 relating to amendments to the land use plan.
Langston Boulevard
Mr. Newkirk described a policy issue in which Arlington County is considering taking ownership of Langston Boulevard, which is presently owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Yorktown Civic Association recently approved a letter urging Arlington County to undertake a study of this issue.
Spring neighborhood day
Mr. Newkirk alerted attendees that the Yorktown Civic Association applied for a $1,000 grant to fund a Spring Neighborhood Day.
Yorktown Civic Association Newsletter
Mr. Newkirk alerted the audience that the Yorktown Civic Association intends to distribute a newsletter next quarter. He urged members to come forward with ideas for content and interest from advertisers. Anyone with ideas is invited to send them to the Civic Association’s email account, yorktowncivic@gmail.com.
25th Place Sidewalk Project
Mr. Haring updated the group on the status of the 25th Place Sidewalk Project. Homeowners on the impacted block voted via mail-in ballot and approved the measure with 71 percent voting in favor. The last phase of this process is for the County Board to vote. If the County Board approves the project, County planners will hold a neighborhood construction meeting before construction begins.
Lee Center
Jean Henceroth, President of the Leeway Overlee Civic Association, described efforts to preserve the Lee Center, on Langston. She addressed the pros and cons of preserving the Center. One plan under discussion is to convert the building into a fire and police training center.
Delegate Patrick Hope
Delegate Patrick Hope addressed the meeting and described the last session of the Virginia General Assembly. In particular, the General Assembly considered three constitutional amendments: an amendment to codify same sex marriage; an amendment to confer a right to privacy under Roe v. Wade; and an amendment to restore voting rights to felons. He also discussed the impact of federal reductions in force on the Arlington County economy.
